Amsterdam Light Festival

Looking for some light in the dark winter days? Let me introduce you to one of my favourite annual events in Amsterdam; the Amsterdam Light Festival! This festival (4th time) is a collection of beautiful and artistic light constructions throughout the city, which is an attraction for both the young, the elderly, the locals and the tourists. How unique is it to see the city in the dark hours of the night, brightened up by millions of lights?

The festival is an opportunity for new and (inter)national light artists or designers to show their first works and to brighten up the city with a special message. The theme of this years’ light festival is ‘Friendship’, which is collectively shaped by all of the different art works around the city, such as giant talking heads, large chandeliers hanging over the canals as a symbol for an ‘open lounge’ and big letter signs with ’Today I love you’. Other artworks are bright projections on historical buildings and lighting systems in city parks that you can actually walk through. The sky is the limit in these creations and it’s truly amazing to see how much work has been put into the designs and especially the construction of them, as a lot of them are facing the water!

"Amsterdam is famous for it’s canals and what a bonus it is to see the thousands of lights from the water itself!" - Laura van Meer

If you want to experience these beauties in the most unique way, it is recommended to go on a boat and visit the festival from the water. There are several shipping companies taking part in spectacle, from bigger tourist boats to smaller, more intimate boats. You can choose to book a special package including dinner or snacks or just enjoy a hot cup of coco with your loved one(s) while enjoying the sky filled with artistic light. Of course you can also enjoy this route by foot or by bicycle if you would like to do this at your own pace.

Would you like to book this tour with a group of friends, with colleagues or with your entire family? No worries, you can visit the Amsterdam Light Festival website and book a walking, cycling or boating tour with a personal guide to get the most out of this event!

When: 28th of November 2015 – 17th of January 2016 (boat rides daily from 17.00 – 23.00h)
